I can’t remember the last time I had this much fun shooting a race. Even when I shoot a race from the moto, the peloton is so often together, that I find it difficult to shoot varied stuff, let alone cover all the clients in a meaningful way. But today was different. There were numerous breaks and they were fluid, the riders in them changed almost constantly, thus keeping it exciting for us and for the spectators. The course was hard and the Basque countryside showed once again its outstanding beauty again.
At the end, a worthy winner emerged after a late attack. I remember Elisa Longo-Borghini saying after Amstel Gold, where she launched a late attack and was in contention until the end, that she was happy that she felt she finally had her legs back. The she felt strong again. Today, she showed how strong she is. It was an impressive ride.
My weeklong adventure in the Basque country comes to an end, but Sean is soon swinging back into action, as the Thuringen Rundfahrt starts on Tuesday.
ps: bonus points for counting all the photos with electric substations in the background. There were many next to today’s route.
