Healthy Ageing Tour 2018 - Stage 2

I’ve covered plenty of stages of the Healthy Ageing/Energiewacht Tour where it’s been a calm, sunny day. On days like that, it’s hard for people to animate the race given the terrain. Today, was not one of those days… Strong winds and rain at sign on made for a very cold start to the day. Once the race headed out of town and onto the exposed, narrow roads the winds tore the peloton to pieces. At the first photo spot, I opened my car door and the wind almost took it off the hinges! I can’t remember wind like that since that crazy Gent-Wevelgem a few years ago that Floortje won, where riders were getting blown into ditches.

Tomorrow will be a very busy day: We’ve got a road race in the morning and a TTT in the afternoon!

Amy Pieters can’t stop laughing about how cold it was at the start.

Even Christine Majerus could manage a little smirk at the conditions.

Anna van der Breggen didn’t seem to be a fan of the weather at all.

Eri Yonamine spots the samba band on the stage. Never has music been as out of sync with an atmosphere! 😉

Peloton approach.

Kirsten Wild not risking been on the wrong side of a echelon today.

Second group on the road as the race is blown to bits.

Christine Majerus in the leader’s group on the large loop.

Lucy Garner keeps her eyes on the wheel in front.

Alessandra Borchi’s balancing act with drinks for the team.

Lisa Brennauer on the finishing circuit.

Such a close finish. Amy Pieters wins the sprint ahead of Alice Barnes by the smallest of margins.

Anna van der Breggen throws her flowers to a friend in the crowd.
