The first race of the season is stressful for riders but also for those shooting the race too. I find it takes a couple of races to start hitting your stride again, getting into the rhythm of the races. It was one of the nice things about the Ladies Tour of Qatar. It was a super straightforward race to shoot but got you into that flow before the mayhem of the Euro season. Combine that with the extra dynamic of getting your head around how races will interpret and implement the new (and needed) safety rules around motos in races and it makes for an exhausting day.
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad is an action packed race, but nothing really happens for the first hour or so, and there’s not that many visually attractive spots to get some photos ‘in the bank’ before the race gets blown to bits after Côte de Trieu. After an hour of racing you find yourself looking at the kilometres ticking down and getting a little anxious that you’ve hardly got anything so far (photo wise) but then it’s one action packed segment after another until the final selection is made with around 25km to go.
Congratulations to Lucinda Brand on her solo win! I think it’s just the start for her Sunweb team, with their impressive roster. Both Lucinda and Ellen looked super strong today and it was great to see Elisa Longo Borghini getting back in the thick of the action too!
